The temples at Abu Simbel are monumental—especially the Great Temple built by Ramesses II.
They were carved into the mountainside during the New Kingdom (~13th century BC) and later relocated to save them from flooding by Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam — a major UNESCO-sponsored rescue project.
Experiencing them in-person gives a deep appreciation of ancient engineering, architecture, and the landscape of Lower Nubia.
